As a rule, the main criteria were: engine size, overall dimensions, number of passenger seats and carrying capacity. These parameters became generally accepted, as a result of which it was quite easy to identify potential competitors. As for Subaru, most of the company's models did not fall under any of the established groups. This manifested itself from the very beginning, when the 360 could not be attributed to either cars or sidecars.

In 1989, Subaru decides to try their hand at motorsport. To participate in Formula 1, a unique twelve-cylinder boxer engine with a volume of 3.5 liters was created. Subaru did not have its own team at that time, and the engine was offered to other participants, but it turned out to be too heavy and therefore was rejected. Then the Japanese company tried to design its own car and failed again: the engine developed less than 500 horsepower, which was already too weak for a Formula 1 model of the early 1990s. But in the World Rally Championship WRC, things went perfectly: the pilots of the Subaru team won a victory there several times.
